RPC presents urban landscaping technique to municipal representatives from United Russia

A working meeting of Moscow municipal representatives from the United Russia party has taken place at the laboratory building of the Apothecary Garden, the oldest botanical garden in Russia founded by Peter the Great. The meeting theme was “Latest Technologies for Urban Care and Development in the Context of Specific Features of Local Flora and Fauna.” Alexey Reteyum, director of the Moscow State University’s botanical garden – Apothecary Garden since 1993, board chairman of the Russian Association for the Development of City Parks and Public Spaces, and vice-president of Russia’s oldest academic community – the Moscow Society of Nature Explorers, took part in the meeting. He made a report on the techniques applied in the Moscow State University’s botanical garden, which is situated in the historical center of Moscow, and the truly remarkable results achieved in the cultivation of plants, the construction of paths with natural bark cover, and a system collecting water from pitched roofs of park buildings for the garden’s self-sustainment.

Chairman of the Moscow city civil organization of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation Elmurod Rasulmukhamedov proposed efforts to bring natural fauna (wild birds of the plains and insects) back to the city. A joint project of the Russian Peat Company (RPC) and the all-Russian Society for Nature Conservation called “Green Roofs. EcoSystem 2.0” and presented by Svetlana Solovyova, PR and advertising head of RPC Group, can increase the green area in the city by 35%. Roof greening with peat mats will create a closed ecosystem on top of buildings for the purposes of landscaping, bird nesting and operation of beehives. Besides the recovery of natural fauna, EcoSystem 2.0 will solve associated problems of the city – the city will be quieter, the problem of street flooding in heavy rains will be mitigated, and the cost of roof maintenance and winter heating will be reduced. Finally, a pleasant view from the windows of high-rise buildings will contribute to psychological stability and will ease anxiety of city residents.

All the technologies were welcomed by municipal representatives and added to the list of projects that could potentially be launched in the near future.
